Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Resin Bound Driveways

1. What is a resin bound driveway?

A resin bound driveway is a surfacing solution made by mixing clear resin with decorative aggregates and trowelling it onto a base to create a smooth, porous finish. Unlike resin bonded surfaces, resin bound finishes are permeable and SUDS compliant.

2. What’s the difference between resin bound and resin bonded?

  • Resin Bound: Resin and aggregate are mixed before application, creating a smooth, durable, and permeable finish.
  • Resin Bonded: Resin is applied to the base first, then aggregate is scattered over it—leaving a textured, non-permeable surface.

3. Can I install a resin bound driveway myself (DIY)?

Yes! With the right tools, preparation, and our resin bound driveway kits, it’s achievable for competent DIYers. Each kit comes with step-by-step guides and video instructions.

4. What surface can I lay a resin bound driveway on?

You can install it on:

  • Tarmac (preferred)
  • Concrete (with primer)
  • Hardcore* with a stable base Avoid laying over block paving, loose gravel, or poorly compacted bases.

* We do not recommend this unless installing at 50mm+ onto well compacted hardcore, which can be very expensive.
For areas like this where accessibility is an issue, we recommend SUDwell Resin Bound Paving Slabs.

5. How long does a resin bound driveway last?

When properly installed and maintained, a resin bound surface can last 15 to 25 years or longer, depending on usage and environmental conditions.

6. Is a resin bound driveway permeable?

Yes. It allows water to drain naturally through the surface, reducing puddling and complying with Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) regulations.

7. How much area does one DIY resin kit cover?

Coverage depends on depth:

  • Up to 15mm depth = approx. 1m²
  • Up to 18mm depth = approx. 0.8m²
  • Each kit contains pre-weighed resin and aggregates for consistent results.

See our calculator to work out how much you require.

8. How long does resin take to cure?

  • Initial set: 4–8 hours (weather-dependent)
  • Light foot traffic: 12–16 hours
  • Vehicle traffic: 48–72 hours

9. What weather is best for installing resin bound driveways?

Install in dry, mild weather:

  • Ideal temperature: 10°C to 25°C
  • Avoid installing during rain or extreme cold.

10. Can I use resin bound gravel for patios and paths too?

Absolutely. Resin bound gravel is versatile and can be used for:

  • Garden paths
  • Patios
  • Pool surrounds
  • Tree pits

11. Is resin bound gravel slippery?

No. When installed correctly, the finish is textured and anti-slip. For added grip, anti-slip glass beads can be added during installation.

12. How do I maintain a resin bound driveway?

  • Regularly sweep to remove debris.
  • Pressure wash occasionally (avoid high pressure near edges).
  • Spot-treat oil and organic stains with gentle detergent.

Trust The Experts

Here at The Resin Bonded Slab Company we are proud to offer you top quality solutions for your resin bound driveways and more. With over 15 years experience in the industry, our specialists have the knowledge and expertise to ensure you receive the best resin bond products in the UK.

We have a dedicated team of specialists that are on hand to help you achieve the perfect driveway, patio, paving or floor. We provide the perfect solution for all your outdoor paving and indoor durable floors. Whether you use our, Trade, DIY kits or have our experts install your paving for you, we know you will be delighted with the results.

We have worked all over the UK creating larger installations for Local Authorities, commercial companies and larger residential properties. If you require our help with an installation, we are happy to discuss this with you, but we would advise the use of our DIY kits for smaller driveways as this will be more cost effective for you.

Our dedicated team will always advise you of the best solution for your paving problem. We are so sure of our DIY kits ease of installation, that we would recommend this for those smaller jobs. You can install your driveway in just a couple of hours and our kits contain everything you need. In many cases you will be able to lay your new resin bound gravel over existing driveways. We provide all you need to patch up your existing surface to make it suitable. Each kit covers a one metre square area for ease of laying. We even have videos showing you how to do it.

Installing a resin bonded driveway is far easier and a lot more durable than a tarmac or concrete alternative. There isn’t the hassle of laying individual bricks, as with block paving. You won’t lose half your stones the way you do with loose gravel.

If you are considering a new driveway, patio or paving, we would recommend resin bound gravel over any other surface. It is low maintenance, permeable and will last you for 25 years or more. Tarmac and Concrete will degrade and crack a lot sooner than their resin bound counterparts. Contact one of our friendly and knowledgeable team for a free quote today.
